If you are in business or you are thinking about going into business do not spend one dollar Marketing until you read this blog.

Thousands of people spend thousands of dollars every day on marketing that doesn’t do anything to grow their business. The one thing they all have in common is the lack of accountability in their actions.

Think about a large business; their marketing department may have a budget of $5million dollars. Now, you better understand that that department has to account for every dollar they spend and the return expected and the return realized on that $1.

Why should small business be any different?

Do you know what you spent marketing your business in the last 12months? Make sure you break this into dollars spent and time spent that you didn’t get paid for. How does the return look? Is it time to try something different?

  • How much does it cost each year
  • How much will the refresh cost which need to be done every 2 years
  • How much have you spent on SEO
  • How much have you spent on Ad words
  • How much business comes direct from your website

Social Media

  • How many channels
  • How often each day do you post
  • How much time is spent posting
  • If you outsource, is it getting results
  • How much have you spent advertising
  • How much business comes through social media

Newsletters

  • How often do you send them
  • How many do you send
  • How many are opened
  • How much business do you generate through your newsletters

Networking events

  • How many do you attend
  • How much do they cost
  • How much time do you spend
  • How much business do you generate

Direct Mail

  • How does this suit your business
  • How much does it cost
  • How much business do you generate

Brochures

  • How does this help your business
  • How much does it cost
  • How much business does it generate

Word of Mouth

  • How often do you ask for referrals
  • How do you ask
  • How do you treat referrals
  • How much business do you generate

Storefront

  • How does it look
  • How much does it cost
  • How does it grow your business
  • How can it increase your sales
  • How much business does it generate

Etc.

Naturally there are many more that I haven’t listed that I am sure you can add to the list.

Make sure that you don’t spend one dollar marketing until you know why you are spending that dollar and what your return will be. If these things don’t pan out as you planned, try something different.

Don’t keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result.
